Teach Bible Verses with Bible Verse Games

Sunday school is an important time in children’s lives. Without the biblical foundation children learn while attending a Sunday school class, teenage and adult life will be much more difficult and stressful.

The bible tells us that we are to…

~ Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it.

This is a promise from God. The verse does not say ‘he may not depart from it’. It says that he will not depart from it. This is why Sunday school is extremely important in a child’s life.

Teaching Sunday School

When teaching the bible story about the little boy giving his lunch to Jesus, many lessons can be learned.

First, the obvious. This was a miracle beyond many miracles. Imagine, Jesus tells his disciples to have the people sit down in groups of 50 and in groups of 100. This teaches us that Jesus was organized.  Now, keep in mind, there are more than 5,000 men plus women and children who are sitting down in this desert place.

The disciples have no food to feed these people and if they did have enough money to buy the food, where would they buy it since there were no stores around? This teaches us that we must have faith and listen to what Jesus tells us.

Second, we learn that this little boy is not selfish. What do you think would have happened if the little boy decided he was too hungry to share his food. After all, he had been sitting there without food for a long time.

Sharing is a great lesson for kids in today’s world as many of them do not share anything. Yes, there are some children who are exceptions that would share everything they had, but is it because they were brought up learning that this was right?

Third, Jesus tells his disciples to gather up all the leftovers. What does this teach us? We learn not to be wasteful. Many children throw perfectly good food away just because they would rather be playing or just because they didn’t like it.

We often tell our children that there are people in the world that to do not have food to eat, but kids need to see it to understand.

Think of ways to teach your kids about feeding the hungry. Maybe visiting a soup kitchen, watching a documentary on television, or even teaching them to ration their food. Plant a garden and teach them about working to grow food, gathering the food, canning or freezing the food, and about how wonderful it tastes when it is not wasted.

If you have extra food, think about donating it to a worthy cause like ‘Meals on Wheels’ or local schools who have a backpack club for kids who are less fortunate.

Let’s Go Fishing!

Now, how can you teach bible verses after learning about this bible story? Easy. First, you’ll need to prepare several bible verses to hang on the wall or to be printed out for the kids to see.

Gather theses supplies:

  • 4 sticks
  • 4 pieces of string (about 3 to 4 feet long)
  • 4 small magnets
  • 8 paper fish
  • 4 paper clips
  • pencil or pen

Directions:

Write a number on the bible verses (ex: 1, 2, 3 ,4, and so on depending on how many verses you’ve prepared). Next, write a number on each of the fish. Glue a magnet to the mouth of each fish. Attach the string to the stick to make a fishing pole. Add the paper clip to the bottom of the string to be the hook.

When a child catches a fish, the child will have to find the number on the fish and match it to the bible verse with the same number. They will say the verse two times and get back in line to catch another fish.

If you have several helpers, this fishing game will go fast and the kids will be able to catch more fish and in turn say more verses.

Tips:

  • We try to use verses for this game that the children are familiar with but do not know by heart yet.
  • Make the game more fun by hanging up a bed sheet in a doorway and let the kids fish over the sheet so they will not know what they will catch. Someone can sit on the other side to add the fish to the paper clip.
  • Use other things besides fish like paper: boots, seas shells, sharks, bottles, a sunken ship, and so on.

May God bless you as you teach children the word of God.
